How do you capture the armored vehicle in the first mission?

I have just had the game for two weeks. I've been playing the first part over and over to learn the game. I've been lucky to repair a little two man scout car with a ring mounted machine gun. I got the scout car right after fixing the tank track in the beginning so I used it to help take town and the hill and destroy the convoy. I was able to do this once, most of the time I blow it up instead of just killing the crew. When I get to repair the half-track the game is essentially over. I did once capture and then repair the medium tank that always charges at me down the hill when I start the attack. I used a soldier out of my tank and when I moused over the medium tank it gave the entry symbol so I had him crawl into the tank while using the main tank to keep enemy heads down. The only fault was a repairable turret and it had a repair kit on board.
