Typhoon was not a good plane for dogfight. it was only a ground attack plane like P47 and P51 Page 110 of TIME-LIFE: THE EPEIC OF FLIGHT: DESIGNERS & TEST PILOTS number 36

Typhoon/Tempest is RAF's "fw190", not suitable for dogfight either, but the speed/firepower is owesome. In western field, the best low alt racer usually belongs to RAF. 1941-42,Mustang MKI,MKIa 1942-1943,Typhoon, MustangII(P51A) 1944,9lb-11lbs Tempest, Mustang III/IV(25lbs P51B/C/D) (9lbs Tempest was ealier than Dora,K4) 1945,13lbs Tempest Drag and energy tactics are not Luftwaffe's "Patent". RAF pilot's also have owesome climb/speed/dive/firepower. Last edited by BlackBerry; 01-22-2010 at 04:19 AM. |

I agree on the Typhie not being exactly a good dogfighter, but calling P-51 and P-47 "only ground attack planes" is heresy.
Although they were good blowing up stuff on the ground, they were excellent fighters as well, so you can't just say they were only A2G. |

P47 in so many simulators i fly, is very heavy for a dinamic dogfight,. Maybe you know fly this cadillac more better that my. maybe i need practice.
And the P51 if i dont put only 30% fuel, stall al the time. Sorry, is not a attacker, is a nice escort, made for fly in a complete herd. like Adolf Galland said. "I should like an outfit of Spitfires for my squadron..."

If you call dynamic dogfight a slow-speed one, then you're right.
But with the right tactics, you can do quite some damage with them. I won't give away any tactics, but take your own conclusions: the P-47 is as heavy as a C-47, has one hell of an engine, can support very high speeds without disintegrating and is very well armed. For the P-51, the situation is a bit similar. Quite easy to figure out what to do, eh? ![]() |
