I'm playing on a 42" 1080p LCD screen and my target recognitions sucks...
I actually move a chair right in fron of the screen to try and find targets in MP (simulator) without much effect.

I'm not sure if the Aliasing actually helps or it makes the planes blend even more with the rest of the environment (especially the ground).
I usually turn off all then image processing on the TV ( it also adds to screen lag even if you have a <5ms LCD)

That would be anti-aliasing .

I have a 24" benQ 1080p monitor running through a cheap hdmi lead...
I sit 1.5 ft away! these 1080 monitors are fairly affordable and make a huge difference...and are at least half the price of the equivalent size 1080 tv..

Does a decent hdmi lead make a Big Difference?

Not really, unless the one you have gives picture distortion, or signal interference due to really bad quality. Otherwise there is no difference between brands, as its an unified technology. In other words, they are all identical.

The biggest problem I have playing on my LCD screen is motion blur. It makes spotting planes in simulation with the head movement control very difficult. So it doesn't matter how big your screen is, if it has a crappy response time you will have some difficulty. BoP on sim must be so much easier to play on a good plasma screen (Zero response time = no blur)

the 22-24 1080 monitors on the market tend to be sub 4m/s response so no noticeable blur...but a juicy 40"+ screen would be nice...$$$$$$$$
