How to improve your performance at Immaculate Grid?

Every day, I play Immaculate Grid, but I don't have much luck with it. I am able to capture all of the stat spaces, but I am unable to capture any of the team spaces. I had my finest try today, in which I only missed three places, all of which were for teams that I don't watch and are so unfamiliar with that I can hardly identify their current lineup. Is there any other method to improve at Immaculate Grid other just visiting BRef and learning the names of all of the players for each combination? Is it something that can only be learnt via experience and by observing the game?
