Game starts out great... and then slows down!

Hey everyone. I'm running XP SP2, P4 3.40GHz, 2gb RAM, Radeon X1650.

whenever i play KB it starts off great... and then eventually slows down to a crawl. This happens no matter what the display/graphics settings are, high or low. I've freed up as many background processes as i can.... what would you suggest i do?
