Graphics are stuck in 3d mode

I was playing the game normally and it crashed. I then tried to launch it again and it appears to be in 3D mode as there was a nvidia message stating that the game was not supported and to press ctrl+alt+insert to remove the message. I have tried going into options and enabling and disabling 3d mode and I have set the settings back to default but I am still stuck in 3d mode. The game is essentially unplayable now which is very frustrating, any ideas?
