I think the problem here is that the AI is actually improved but it reveals a few holes in how it's logic works. The improvement is that the AI now actually relies on being able to see the enemy to realize that they are there and engage. Previously the AI could see 360 degrees all around and sort of had a magic sense whenever the enemy came into range.
What needs to happen is that if the bombers DO call for help that the AI realizes that the enemy must be visible to other nearby friendlies and flies in that direction in general. I suspect that is actually very hard to do but I'm not 100% sure.
