The Yamato had anti aircraft shells for its main guns. They were designed to explode in mid air with large shrapnel. This is the only ship I have heard of using this kind of round. In reality it was not very effective but you can see it being used here and in the film it takes out a couple of incoming planes:
my grandads ship had 15 inch guns firing shells weighing a ton,i think the yamato had 18 inch guns.end of an era for battleships but they dont half look impressive
