skills and maps

How do you upgrade a skill? I have a new character and I have earned 2205 experience points. I see no character screen and no real option to upgrade.

How do maps work? I got a map from a bad guy. It says it is for treasure on a planet. How do I use it?

P.S. I'm playing SR 2: Reboot
