Just purchased Star Wolves I and II through Steam, major error in the game

Hello,

No matter what I do, my ships will not actually hit the enemies during combat, not even the stationary drones during the tutorial. I hear my guns firing from all my ships, but no tracers appear in the screen and the enemies are undamaged no matter how long I let it run. They are unable to hit me as well.
