Hmm, when you are at layout menu make sure to go all the way to the right till Custom (pc Joystick) is highlighted.
I made the mistake of going right to custom at the start and not Custom (pc joystick). Make sure your controller is turned off, before you start the game.

Now when you start the game the center fire button under the Safe shield is the x button and the one to the right of it is the back button.

Once you set it to custom (pc Joystick) in the layout settings then the front main trigger is the x button and the button under the safe shield is back button. Now you can have the ps3 controller on and use it to go through the button config list and then set you controls to what ever you want and save but when your done you have to exit the game. Turn off the ps3 controller and then start the game and use just the stick, If you don't do this it messes up the throttle control. and the throttle won't respond.

Got it ?
