Regarding anything "official"...no. On the other hand the Unified Installer V1.1 was just released over at AAA and all the new maps, skins and flyables are sweet.

No official news, still a year away or maybe slightly less. Official website was hopefully going to be done in December but that was the last we heard of it. Nothing new there then. Like Thunderbolt has already stated all the real work is being done by the modding lot at AAA, the unified installer is fantastic and some of the work that these lads have done is simply stunning.

Somehow, this has a funny twist. If there wouldn't be the MODS, the silence would be even louder around here.

The MODS have bound people to the IL-2 series again and therefor bought Oleg more time for SoW:BOB. Besides he couldn't rival the amount of news that is coming out of AAA anyway.

Absolutely, Oleg must be kicking himself because quite clearly IL2 is not dead, if only he had considered releasing the official 4.09 patch just think of the money he could of made by the possible add on's with new aircraft cockpits maps etc. Some of the detail these guys have gone to working on the old il2 engine is staggering, but just imagine what Oleg and his team could of done without splitting the community. Currently SOW is dead, Il2 is becoming very fresh again just look how busy the modded servers are on Hyperlobby.

You are kidding? If you really believed that, what are you doing posting "SOW website this and SOW website that"

I agree Bobb, I really get a kick out of statements that suggests that the AAA community is doing more and superior work than the SOW developers.

Anyway as far as OFF goes. The aircraft and terrain look good and the AI dogfights reasonably well. I'm not so sure about the damage model. I enjoy using a map and terrain landmarks to navigate but the OFF map is almost useless and there seems to be few if any obvious landmarks. There are alot of airfields but every base looks exactly the same that I've seen. The aircraft lables eg "British Airman Sopwith Camel" makes me wonder if I joined back up with my squadron after a fight, but they're on the proper heading so it must be them. I've run into two enemy aircraft and shot down one in 11 campaign missions, the closest bogies were 4nm, but ours lead aircraft always seemed to avoid any contact, or attack the intended target. Although I did observe two sopwith straffing a convoy close to the airbase target, but I'm not sure they were from my flight.

After my last mission I tried using the play back features which shows a line traced on the map and times aircraft were shot down. It was interesting to see that three enemy aircraft and two friendly aircraft were shot down. BUT I never seen an enemy aircraft and using the cheat radar the closest bogies were atleast 4 nm away. During the patrol I would go down and straf some ground targets, while keeping an eye on my squad overhead, and nothing came close to them. Obviously I'm missing something.

I'm going to start another campaign where I'm the flight leader. As I said there were plenty of bogies on the other campaign but the leader never investigated, so flying as leader should make things much more interesting.

Anyway take all this with a grain of salt as I've only flown a dozen or so campaign missions and the same amount of single missions.

Bobb what i mean is that currently there is no news on SOW and it is going to be a long while yet, everyone was hoping/ expecting for SOW last year, it never happened. We all thought that once SOW was close or complete then we would officially get 4.09, what has happened because of the modders is that new life and interest has been blown into IL2, i think that was an opportunity that Oleg missed. For the record i did not mean SOW is dead as in a project its just that folk have got bored of waiting and have started using the mods to enhance their flying experience.

I agree Tree, he could have carried on making money with the IL-2 series. BUT the game would have stagnated and held back by the limitations of the game engine. Others like the ROF developers would be coming out with a new advanced game engine and he would soon be five years behind the curve. Even console games like BOP appear to making new benchmark strides in combat flight sim development.

We're lucky to have this passionate combat flight sim developer, with a vision for a new cinematic experience. There arn't many of them. He doesn't need us spreading false and negative information that causes even one lost sale of his new product. Our genre market is too small and hasn't been on solid financial ground for sometime.
