I think the game is absolutely amazing, and honestly the most enjoyable turn-based strategy game I've played at least since Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic. Too bad that the game's lack of marketing (perhaps due to budgetary constraints?) has prevented it from becoming a big hit at least in the U.S. Nonetheless, there are shortcomings, and I plan on discussing some of them, after I am done with all 3 campaigns.

And yes, I want to see the expansion in the U.S. market very soon!

Default Great game!

Only reached the fourth mission of the human campaign so far (experiencing a technical crash issue from time to time, which hopefully will be resolved soon) and initial impression is that the game is very good indeed (I can post some detailed thoughts once I have played more).

My one caveat (which is a personal preference rather than a significant problem with the game) is that I don't like the turn-based scoring approach (i.e. gold/silver/bronze based on number of turns).

I have done all the missions with a gold rating so far, but I get the feeling that this may lead to the missions being more rushed than I would ideally like.

I tend to prefer being able to explore all of the maps (visiting all side towns/fortresses) etc. and I get the suspicion that as the capaign progresses this will get less and less likely.

Personally I would like the gold/silver/bronze to be based on something other than just speed (perhaps you could base it on unit losses v. unit kills ratio or something measuring how well you use/shepheard your army?).

That said; Top Game!

This is a very interesting idea. I like that. Instead of turn caps (apart from some special missions, like capture the town, before the enemy casts some powerful spell, or catch them, before they escape) one could give the enemy reinforcements arriving on turn X. Like in Waterloo

Argl ... I made a long post and got logged off T___T
Ok .. once again

So .. FW is a great game, a real successor of Fantasy General (FG) with some improvements and some.. things missing

Graphics are good but they are too generic. I've played too many games with orcs and elves ... Anyway they're well made.

Sounds : they are good. Not really something to say about this.
Musics : fairly good .. but .. as a personnal taste.. I miss the old "classical" music of FG that made the time stopped ...

Gameplay : easy to learn how to handle units, no misclik or "Damn I moved that archer instead of selecting that griffon". The customizations of units on level up is THE main addition to FG. And a really good one. It should add some tactical openings .. like the bird that can scare the enemies that are within it. Excellent way of adding tactics easily. One thing that I can't stand after playing too much Supreme commander : we are forced to stay too close to our units. I would like a camera that can zoom out really far away. the Supcom strategic zoom is just so good ...

Pros : a good game, with a lot of tactics involved. Why not adding some strategic elements? In a campaign why not add the research function FG had? Every elements taken from Fg was well made. the customization of units is so good and spells are a great addition.
Cons : I really miss the customized general of FG ... like the arch mage that could cast a spell each turn or the captain that had cheaper cavalry units.

Conclusion : a really great game. Love it ... keep up the good work.

Cheers.

I've been playing for a couple weeks, and I think this game is very well done. Nothing is perfect, and certainly FW could be improved, but, overall, it's quite impressive. I love the tactical possibilities, which are greatly enhanced by the way in which terrain functions within the game. And the AI seems to be significantly more capable than in most games--altho this may be, in part, a function of the relatively low number of units and relatively small maps. Nevertheless, it's fun to play against an AI which seems to look for any mistakes you make and to exploit them ruthlessly.

I've seen a number of criticisms of the graphics, but I can't help but wonder what such people want. I think the graphics are wonderful, and greatly add to one's enjoyment of the game. I also read someone's opinion that the perks are useless--this is just silly. The increased capabilities conferred thru the perks greatly boost units' combat effectiveness.

The only significant gripe I have is the lack of a random map generator. I'd really like to see this in a patch or add-on.

I've got the old FG music files somewhere on my network, I wonder if we could import them into FW?

I read the manual and tried the demo and enjoyed it. I'll be purchasing the game as soon as I have some time.

Anyways, here are my thoughts:

Pros:
- Absolutely love the turn based tactical combat reminiscent of FG
- Graphics and sounds are superb for this type of game.

Cons:
- You don't get a good idea of what needs to be done at the start of a mission so you can't really judge how fast you should be pressing on. For example, in the human mission in the demo, I took more time than I should have assaulting the first castle, only to then find out that I needed to take another fort and church. I think that the number of turns to achieve gold should have a lower initial value and increase as you receive new objectives.
- A unit should auto-rest if it does not perform any action for that round.
- I felt rushed to complete the objectives within the alloted gold turns. I don't want gold turn limits and their rewards to be removed. But I would like to have the game acknowledge and record that I have achieved the objectives in the given time bracket, then allow me to continue the map at my leisure. So for example, I was able to finish the human mission in the demo within the gold time limit, but because of the rush, I was unable to explore the western part of the map. At this point, I would like to be able to continue the map without losing my gold trophy.

My Suggestions:
- Fantasy general was fun but it wasn't as in deep as panzer general. Things that could be added to this game:

Suppression fire: Lowers the effective number of enemy troops for attack purposes for a turn or combat phase.

Entrenchment: Each turn that a unit does not attack, move, or rest. It spends that turn "entrenching" itself. This increases its defense and offense up to an entrench max as long as it does not move out of its current hex.

Multifront combat: I don't remember what this was actually called in panzer general, but every time a unit was attacked in a given turn, its entrenchment and defense value was lowered.

Overrun attack: Tanks had it in Panzer General. Cavalry could get it in FW.

I'm not sure how all of these would fit in this fantasy universe (cavalry entrenching??...maybe rename it from entrenchment to combat preparation) but they did make panzer general more interesting to me.

- Strategic level gameplay:
One thing that I always felt was missing from games like fantasy general was the world conquering aspect. I almost want to try a game that goes further than just one mission after another. Remember the old Koei games like Nobunaga's Ambition II and Romance of the Three Kingdoms II (my favorites). They used a combination of nation and army building, diplomacy, spying, subterfuge, ect... When you attacked another province, you then entered a hex combat map.

Default Fantasy Wars = Good Game

I have enjoyed playing Fantasy Wars. I am a big fan of turn based gaming and a fan of hex based gaming (both PC and tabletop). I am glad to see the developers and publishers put out a game like Fantasy Wars and hope to see additional releases in the game and other games like FW. There is a good fan group for turn based games out there and a devoted following of the genre. I think most TBS fans will like playing Fantasy Wars. I have been passing the word about the game onto other players I know out there.
