Yes the grey nurse spit was with the RAAF 457sqn in Australia north
It was on the Mk VIII spit and they are not part of the the European campaign.

Historical?? Well . . . sort of.
The RAAF had MkVc (Trop)'s to start with - with the big filter in the snout, then MkVIII's. RAAF 457Sqn MkVIII's, with sharkmouths, were part of 80 Wing, 1TAF. Most of 80 Wings MkVIII's appear to have carried the Ace of Spades rudder marking. 457 was known as the 'Grey Nurse' squadron and several of their MkVIII's carried the Grey Nurse legend and various styles of sharkmouths. 457Sqn's code at this time was ZP-_. RAAF Spitfire Serials were in the A58-xxx series. |

First up, don't get me wrong - I quite like having a RAAF Pacific Theatre looking Spitfire to fly around CLoD in - and thank you heaps for providing me with one - it's very much appreciated.
But however pedantic of me it might seem, CLoD (at this stage anyway) only has MkI, MkIa and MkIIa Spits. The Australian MkVc's looked quite different to MkI's, MkIa's and MkIIa's because of the tropical filter and the 2x20mm Canon + 4xM/gun fitout; and I can't find any record of 457Sqns MkVc's having either the Ace of Spades rudder marking, the sharkmouths or the Grey Nurse legend. The MkVIII's which replaced the MkVc's also looked quite different; with a different fin/rudder profile, the 2x20mm Canon + 4xM/gun fitout, 6 a side exhaust stacks and radiator/oil cooler changes - and superior performance to all the others. With the A58-xxx serial layout, one needs 7 characters to create a serial number. Last time I tried 7 characters for a RAF Serial Number in CLoD, the last two characters were truncated. I keep my copy of your well executed skin with my Semi-Historical skins; and I thank you again. |
