Siteseeker, one thing I did that was really beneficial was go to the single player tutorial section and set up a session for yourself in whatever plane you like. Set the mission to Realistic. Set up the fight against 10 or so enemies and put them on rookie mode. Here you can play with elevator and aileron settings and also practice shooting the buggers down. See you out there.

+1

i'll help realistic mode has been a pleasant suprise for me and, i'll volunteer my ass to be shot down so others can enjoy it as much as i've been.. but seriously guys i know from experience in realistic you need to get an affinity with a type or model of aircraft...... every time i fly that mc202 despite it's good points, i'm still just a smallish bright orange target! When i'm in a 109 it can get painful

I never understand why people say lower your aileron sensitivity? Yes lower the elevator sensitivity but always leave the ailerons at maximum. Roll rate is the most important thing and you don't want to be slowing that down (lowering ailerons doesn't help you stop stalling anyway).

If you want to change the elevator sens. you will need to find the "sweet spot" for each different plane to get the best turning the plane can do. They are very different, If you set up your sens. for say a I-16 (under half), then the next match fly a 109 of La you will have terrible turning performance if you don't remember right at the start of the match to set a 109/la level (almost max)

Oh and when you play arcade again remember to set it at max again.

leave ailerons at the top for all planes they dont make any difference for the hurricane
turn the elevators down 5 notches from the top

Nice one siteseeker and good to see your sticking with it. Most of us regulars are on every night 7-11(plus that one last game!) gmt and anyones welcome to join us to either just fly or get stuck in and try dogfighting. I personally am really enjoying it and find the more time I put in the better I'm becomming. I'll second the advice that sticking to one plane is the best approach. My mkII spit may not be the fastest or best turning plane in the game but I've got to know it through and through and will happily go up against anything in it confidently that I'm in with a chance.

took Brig suggestion on the settings and seems to work pretty good... also took another posters sugestion and used the LA7 which seemed to work pretty good for me while learning.

in realistic there must be a damage model or something... took a couple of hits and could get the plane to turn or bank... i also managed to get my up close shot lined up and 2 or 3 shots before the big red RELOADING came on.... ARRGH!!! =)

it certainly is a new lease on the game!!!!!

The damage model is different from arcade. You can put a plane down by just destroying the wings or control surfaces. It's were the 'bail out' argument comes in in that it's better to bail and credit the shooter rather than fall 3000ft and just crash. This is especially true in limited ammo games where rather than totally destroy an aircraft it's better to just fatally wound someone and then move onto the next target rather than use up all your ammo 'blowing' them out of the sky. Just a pity everyone doesn't follow this gentlemans rule and will just keep crashing. Pity there isn't a crash and youre out of the game, bail and you fly again rule in the online game as this would elivate this. That said the guys I play with will bail if crtically wounded and anyone who doesn't tends to get singled out! It's simple, I'll happily bail for anyone who damages me beyond control but will subsequently crash if it isn't returned when they're shot down. And in real life, would they really die with their plane... Don't think so!
