Remember, every article and preview of BoP has stated that the multiplayer details HAVE NOT been revealed. That would be where the other planes are flyable, especially considering the IGN write-up describes the MP as being more adversarial than co-op.

12 planes have been confirmed....for the CAMPAIGN. I wouldn't fret too much.

I hope BoP gains some reasonable buzz otherwise i would say it confirms that we're all huge nerds following a cult genre.
