Default Newbie needs some answers please

Newbie here, but been playing IL2:1946 for over a year now and still love it.

Favourite aircraft are I16 Typ24 for manouverability and clear vision, being an open cockpit, Me262 (all marques) for speed and firepower, although it does suck as a jabo (What was Adolf thinking?) He162C, because its so simple, versatile and effective and similarly the Do335 V13, whether shredding bombers or ground attack, it's awesome.

Anyway, why am I posting?

I don't think I'm getting the best out of my PC setup. I'm running a 6GB, i7 processor machine that is pretty much top notch currently, although my gfx card is the upper end of mid range (ATi Radeon 5570 1024mb) I don't think the gfx card is holding me back though. My monitor is 1920x1080 16:9 HD I'm still running V4.07m as shipped on CD-ROM.

So here is a number of questions.

1. Whilst IL2 is a few years old now, what is the maximum res I can get? Currently the best seems to 1280x960x32, DirectX, Stencil Buffering on. Will a new(er) patch allow me to tweak it any higher and make full use of my monitors highest res?

2.Where can I download the patches?

3. How do I install the patches?

4. Do I have to install them in order, ie; 4.08 then .09, .10 etc?

5. Will the splash screen on launch update, and show what version I'm running?

6. My mission editor does not work. I've looked at the tutorials on other sites and followed them carefully but it seems that certain fields and options are simply missing, so I can't progress. Will update the version with patches cure this?

1), you can run whatever res you like. go in to the conf.ini and change, mine is for example

[window]
width=1920
height=1200

ColourBits=32
DepthBits=24
StencilBits=8
ChangeScreenRes=1
FullScreen=1
DrawIfNotFocused=0
EnableResize=0
EnableClose=1
SaveAspect=0
Use3Renders=0

NB if you run the game in directx you will not be able to get perfect mode, run the game in opengl for best gfx, and select perfect mode under landscape in the game, otherwise your stuck on excellent.

difference between excellent landscape and perfect landscape,

2) get patches here,

http://www.mission4today.com/index.p...ownloads&c=564

you will have to register, but the site great anyways.

3) just double click on the patch and point it to your il2 folder.

4) yes

5) yes

6) i think you're using it incorrectly, takes a while to get used to it but its fine in 4.07 (some new options in 4.10.)

heres a good guide,

http://www.il2-fullmissionbuilder.com/index.php

hope that helps

Fruitbat, thanks for your reply and it looks sound. I have changed the conf.ini just as you told me (I put my max res 1920x1080) and changed to OpenGL.

But 1920x1080 does not show up in the video menus, neither does the PERFECT setting in any other video modes. Any attempt to set a higher res simply defaults back to 1280x960x32. I can't get it higher!

I have not installed any patches yet, as the site has just crashed. I did manage to get one Hakenkreuz file to down load swastikas, but bloody windows will not let me install it as it 'might harm my computer' The folder and .exe are installed but the 0.hc through 4.hc files are rejected.

I have restarted my computer too. No joy. Looking at the root file structure, its a bit messy, as I loaded 1946 over my Forgotten battles title.

Shall I uninstall it all and start again re-installing only 1946? (I checked the conf.ini in both root files, and they are the same. It seems one updates the other.)

Any advice?

Flanker,

As for old software 1946 is XP! I ran it okay on vista (with some issues) but Win7 is backwards compatible. Right click on the icon in your desk top and select troubleshoot compatability. Worked for me

Oh fruitbat, its a 64 bit machine.

Should 'ColourBits=32' be changed to 'ColourBits=64' ?

Simply copy the whole Il2 directory of your old PC into the new one, but NOT in the "Program Files" directory. In my case it is c:\Ubisoft\Il2 1946.

Then launch the Il2FB executable as administrator.

This would solve your issue.

Cheers,

Hi lads!
I have a question too.
I always take "Torpedo failed to entry water" (or something like it), when I try to use my torpedo. That thing is annoying me, I feel like a stupid pilot? Whats my problem? Why it can't "enter" the water?
I'm flying low, sometimes really low and slow. But it always give me that error
It says" torpedo broken while entering in water" when i touch the water, i even try this.

Please help me.

Note: This error came with 4.10

- Do NOT install in the the Program files folder.
- try the a.exe if you still have problems
