Default Anton Y., why don’t you …

Do the same that “Lucasarts” did around 1990 when they released the game “Secret weapons of the Luftwaffe” (SWOTL): they had one notable historian and four actual WWII pilots as consultants. SWOTL had Professor Williamson Murray and the USAAF WWII pilots James Finnegan (P-47 pilot), Robert Davila (B-17 pilot) and Thomas Masters (P-47 and P-51 pilot) and the 197 confirmed-victory Luftwaffe WWII ace Walter Krupinski (Me 109, Fw 190 and Me 262 pilot) as consultants. Now that was 19 years ago, I know, but some of those WWII flyers are still alive.

For instance, if I am not mistaken, these guys are still alive:

- The legendary British combat and test pilot Captain Eric Melrose "Winkle" Brown, who has test piloted 487 aircraft - including all Spitfire marks, Mustangs and 55 WWII Luftwaffe aircraft - and countless marks of those 487 aircraft;
- The legendary USAAF (P-51) ace Charles Elwood "Chuck" Yeager;
- The 222 confirmed-victories Luftwaffe ace Erich Rudorffer who flew combat missions from 9-1939 to 5-1945 in Me 109’s, Fw 190’s and Me 262’s;
- The 27 confirmed-victories Luftwaffe ace Willi Reschke who, in his 48 combat missions, flew the Ta-152 H1 from 1-45 to 5-45.

And surely some great WWII Red Air Force pilots must also still be among the living that can give the Russian aircraft in BOP a little test. I think Rudorffer was consulted in 2007 for the 350,000 Euro budget Finnish war movie “Tali-Ihantala 1944”. I mean if (some of) the Beatles can be trumped up for a silly console music game, how about letting real deal WWII pilots test fly some of your BOP WWII aircraft for authenticity checks. They won’t be around for ever these WWII pilots, so why not? Consult some WWII pilots who flew the actual WWII aircraft that you are simulating to do some BOP test flying and give you some tips on fine-tuning and improving the aircraft flight data in BOP so that they conform more to reality. And next to that there is the marketing benefit of involving them in BOP, not to mention the fun in meeting them.

What is there to lose, really?

SWOTL was an epic game!! Cockpit views for all planes including bombers, Full length real-time missions, Take-offs and landings for all missions, Allied AND Axis missions. I seem to remember it even having some sort of mission editor or dynamic campaign or something like that. All that for a game that came out almost 20 years ago...

People used to put a lot more emphasis on content, rather than graphics, back then. I miss those days.

Somebody else that's seeing my point; finally!!! (Re: my thread 'Don't you feel ripped off as a Console Gamer?'). Although I completely forgot about the fantastic SWOTL; & like you say - some 20 years ago.
Even Over G Fighters (IMO), is a runaway winner, up against BoP in the realism, immersion, controlabilty & customization/replayability depts.

Like everything nowadays, it's all quantity rather than quality. As in, the companies don't really care about what's in the game and how it looks. But they just want to put out as much as possible. No matter how the end result is. You can't blame Anton and the other dev's. I'm sure if it was up to them, it would have been a true quality game. Like games WAY long ago were.

Well, I would say since the flight models are supposedly directly taken from IL 1946 - they would be losing time doing any research on that because Oleg Maddox and team already did all that hard work along with any data the sim community turned up that was useful.

Given IL2 1946's reputation for its flight models - esp compared to other WWII sims, I wouldn't suggest messing with it. Also, I wouldn't ever consider Lucasart's dedication to accuracy to be anywhere close to the level Oleg desires in flight simulation - even if they were making SWOTL today they wouldn't come close if they consulted every pilot still alive plus went back in time to seek advice of the dead ones. Oleg and crew set a standard that will not be matched until they release their next sim.

Still you got a point....SWOTL got an awesome camera mode, so you could tape your dogfights and later on look at them from any angle and also have a look at at the action going on around you.

What was nice too: It had some kind of role playing elements too. You could build your own character, fly with it for some time until it had reached a certain level of experience or become an ace and then have him flying as part of your squadron as a wingman. Even though the AI was not the smartest, you could feel and see a difference of their flight experience.

I have Swotl and BoB still running on an old PC just if I feel like playing it from time to time. Believe me...for the flight experience I would choose BoP or 1946 over SWOTL every time.

Have a nice day

Wireflyer...on his way to MCO Int.
