Default thoughts on the console iteration of IL2 sturmovik from a fan

So far its great , im at the 4th chapter i think and im loving it. Im playing through it on simulation mode and im using the Ace edge joystick.

When i first started out i thought it would be a huge problem trying to find ground targets and i was wrong. When trying to find ground targets in simulation mode all that is needed is smart use of the map and getting at least 1 bomb kill that will mark the area for futre strafing.

As for finding planes , i believe at some level this is broken for those that DO NOT HAVE the ace edge stick. From what i understand the aviator is a hat switch for viewing and the 360 controller scheme is pretty much broken for those who dont want to get used to it. I do NOT believe this should be fixed by putting indicators into simulation mode. In fact im 100 percent sure it would ruin the fun of simulation mode by making it essentially realistic mode.

I think for the sequal of this game the developer needs to make the hori stick readily available for purchase for the hardcore gamers looking to buy one.

I love the fact that every plane has its own characteristics that are realistic to the real planes (I-16 negative G engine stall for example)

As for multiplayer i like it , the netcode is pretty solid , but i cannot see it being ANY fun outside of simulation mode due to people just riding the target camera like children, IMO target camera and direction indicators should be removed from realistic(not plane indicators , im talking about the arrow that points in the direction of the enemy plane when outside of your veiw in the cockpit)

And then there is the one thing that is most likely going to kill this game before it gets off the ground and that is the kill system. I know its hard to tell if a plane is crashing due to damage or if its due to a greedy pilot. but something has to be done.

I suggest an "ace system" that ranks the player primarily of how many kills he has ranked up in a row before dying in a match

So here would be an example of a score board

Name | Ace kills | Kills | deaths | points

guilty | 6 | 8 | 3 | 350
Cheater| 1 | 38 | 43 | 23

BTW the cockpits need to be there for the fockewulfs and bf109s !
Make that priority DLC

Guilty,

realistic mode with the HUD turned off removes the Red and Yellow arrow indicators. The target camera is still there but it is still a nice compromise between Realistic and full sim.

I was also surprised how easily I found the ground targets. I think the draw distance was slightly increased compared to the demo but I could be wrong.

However, finding them in the streets of Berlin or those bunkers in the Ardennes (single mission) is still close to impossible. Had to fly these missions on realistic mode first to know where they were actually hidden.

I second the cockpits for the 109's and 190's - absolutely essential. If there was a DLC offering all missing cockpits I'd be crazy enough to pay up to 20 Euros for it. I love the German jetfighters and having no cockpit view (and most likely never a DLC to fix it frankly speaking) sucks.

I still cannot believe what I hear about the kill system (couldn't find games). If you damage a plane badly enough that its pilot can't keep it airborne you have to get the kill.

have to get the kill.

Don't say that paying for cockpits - don't even put the idea into their heads!

I want them to succeed in droves, I want this game to be the bench mark for all other console flight sims to set their standards to. But I also want them to - do the right thing - I good developer should offer essential updates for free and only offer 'pay-for' DLC in the guise of missions coupled with new planes etc.

I have mixed feelings about DLC. I believe in value for money and very few titles offer DLC that is truly valuable. I also believe in games developers doing well and succeeding, but when I see the likes of EA offering stuff that was left out of games on purpose JUST SO THE DIE-HARDS WOULD PAY FOR IT AS DLC, sickens me!

It's not EA, but Rise of Flight comes to mind...

The games I enjoy the most usually had good DLC as well. The car packs in Forza 2 were worth every cent. Certain games stick out from the crowd - IL2 BoP being one of them, so I suppose we get our money's worth in October.
