Game Crashing to Windows Login Screen

About 1 hour into the game l was in the middle of a battle when suddenly the game crashed, not to deskktop but to my Windows login screen. What has caused this, l have never had a game crash to my Windows login screen before.

I also have over 300 GB of disk space available

Game version 1.7, bought in UK at retail shop.
