Default Random Engine - Bless or Curse ?

I just want to clear something up.

I started playing the game at the same as a good friend of mine.

Overall, he played 3-4 h more than me.

He finished the game, being lvl 29-30. I am just lvl 18. Same class, almost same units, same spells.

I am currently exploring the elven lands/going back to the mines, destroying the demons.

Question : How does the random engine work ? I presume that there are some constants. Like a proportional figure for the monster numbers ?

I ask this because my friend managed to finish the mines more rapidly than me as he didn't find so many enemy troops or the same numbers as me.
