My own personal opinion is YES. There will always be some who are negative about this game/sim but there is a lot of enjoyment to be had even though it has been officially abandoned. There is talk that there are some mods coming from the community which will only improve it (lets hope so). There isn't any official support for Sli/Crossfire but Luthier before the project was shut down did release the Sli code which we have to install ourselves (there are instructions in the forum for installing the Sli code).
There is nothing for Crossfire. Doesn't matter if you are an offline player or prefer online multi player missions there is something for all and a lot of helpfull people here with advise if you are having trouble. Go for it.

In my opinion, yes, it is worth it, there are some things to keep in mind however as you are coming from 1946.
1.) The main menu system is pretty clumsy at best, it is simple enough to use but some functionality that existed in 1946 is simply not there, this mainly manifests itself when you are trying to set up your loadouts for your aircraft. 2.) The quick battle is not nearly as functional as it was in 1946, instead of choosing your plane and the enemy planes, loadouts, altitudes and so forth in one menu, you select a sort of "canned mission" and change a few variables, minor in the whole scheme of things but this is something that I would have thought was a no-brainer. 3.) The sim is very demanding on your GPU VRAM, I found it "playable" on my older Geforce 9800 GT with 512 Mb but the ground was a blurry mess as a result, it was difficult to find landing areas and also to navigate as a result, after I upgraded to a Radeon 7770 2GB, it works very well but that is mostly due to the 2GB of VRAM, something to keep in mind I suppose. 4.) You will need to change all the default ammo belt settings for every plane, frankly, the ones packaged with the sim are useless at best and will get you killed at worst, this is made tougher because of a somewhat clumsy way that you have to do this and make it stick. Now some good stuff to keep in mind. 1.) You will not find another realistic WWII sim like this (at the moment), while it has it's issues (that are allegedly going to be mostly fixed with a mod), it is still the only realistic WWII sim out there, it has a very authentic feel that is only increased by the limited (thankfully) but well represented plane set. 2.) Graphics are very nice assuming you have a GPU that can deliver them, while I would not call it the end all, be all of flight sims graphically, it is very pretty and manages to really capture the feel very well. 3.) Flight models are mostly good, again, this is something that is allegedly going to be fixed with a mod so it will probably be even better soon. 4.) It has a nice mission editor, I would love to see more tutorials on youtube or something but it is still pretty nice and it is somewhat easy to whip up a new mission to play. Finally, IL-2 Cliffs of Dover is a good sim, I won't go as far as to call it a great one (at least until mods work out most of the big problems) but it is still the best we have at the moment. I find it a shame that development was handled so badly, had it had a bit more time in the oven, it would have been fantastic. Buy it and make your own call, it is a good sim and worth owning anyway. |

Mike is right in a lot of what he says, there is a learning curve to over come as far as control setup and tuning is concerned. There is no QMB as we know it in Il2 46, most has to be done through FMB.
The other thing is that the specs as advertised on the sales information is far from correct. There is an issue with Dx9 systems (xp and earlier) and you will need probably a quad core system (3.4gig+), 6gb ram,W7 and a vid card with 1Gb vid memory min. (2gb is better) to have a system that will give you the best performance. Cliffs of Dover is far more demanding on graphics than Il2 46 is. There have been some issues reported with W8 (as I'm not using that yet I can't confirm that issue). Read through the tech and performance sections, there you will find what others are having trouble with and some fixes for the problems.

When the game runs for you, it's worth it's weight in gold.. Unfortunately, without a good system, you won't be able to enjoy all of the bells and whistles. But for the price, it's worth it even to try it at lower settings.
I say buy it and see what it is they set out to create.

Playing offline can get boring and frustrating as the Radio-Communications wit AI doesn´t work properly. Also, you should do a quick search for the ATAG-Group and Team-Fusion. Team Fusion is a mod-Group who is doing improvements on the game. The frist patch should be out in something like 48 hours. It will include drastic FM-improvements, some grapical fixes (contact visability) and probably much more. This patch could be a hughe step forward. The whole community is waiting for it! Summed up: Yes, you should buy it, IF you have a system that can carry the load of CloD (the specs mentioned above are what you really need. You won´t get anything good with less Vram / ram).

Its a no brainer if your pc is up to it and you like WWII sim. Good online and there are good offline campaigns, REDUX and Desastersoft.
Statremike can you post your fave loadouts for the main types, I would like to try, I have been using default all my time. |

Mike's summary is spot on apart from his description of the graphics as 'very nice' -I would describe them as stunning. Just have a look at some of Freycinet's videos
www.flightsimvids.com But you do need a competent CPU and graphics card Is it worth buying - well it can now be bought in the UK for under £10 so the answer to that is obvious. |
