Returning Vestlig

My question is how to return to the first islands (the viking's islands) in the later part of the game. I'm in Arlania and I've just beated Guilford. I thought that was impossible to return there, unless following the main quest but I completely died against the undead in the mage tower and i woke up in Vestlig. How can I return there without losing my whole troops?

You must be in Greenwort's waters when you attempt to travel.

Now there all the enemies are "very weak", it's better not think about it...

Not your fault, the game just does a poor job explaining it. I only figured out you had to be in Greenwort because of Merlassar, and then realized you can bascially go right back to the starter islands first thing after talking to Guilford. And it took me an Eternity to notice you can unlock the Freedom Islands by talking to the guy at the port...
