Default Someone comment on 100 octane aircraft, please!

I'm at work and super curious about the 100 octane performance vs 109s.

Spitfire *and* Hurricane, of course. Can anyone that has been in a couple furballs with it let me know?...average combat/cruise speed, rate of climb, stability, temperatures?

Theres a reason for instrumenting a plane for test..
That being a pilots's 'perception' of what is going on can be very different from what is 'actually' going on.

Still think the Hurricane is a bit slow. 230mph S/L @ 6.25 & 2650rpm, this should be 260mph, tit pulled got 270mph which should be 290mph. Some wierd behaviour with the throttle (boost) now seemingly linked to the RPM and mixture intrinsically. I probably just need to understand how to get the best out of it though, I can't be doing it right atm.

Remember B6 stated the boost gauges aren't updated yet so will still be showing the same numbers as last patch. Don't base calculations on max == 6.25lbs, fyi.

Also, how is the throttle action? Fixed?

Spit 1a 100 octane gives 12lbs boost with ABC selected and gives 9lbs boost on full throttle, the gauge still only shows up to 8lbs but if you put the mouse cursor over the gauge it shows actual readings.

another point with regards to performance, bearing in mind a test I recently did, the atmospheric model seems to be ISA +10...or 10 degrees C above standard conditions, and this is going to give a reduction in performance compared to data in the manuals, a rule of thumb or very rough and ready way to calculate density altitude is to add 1200' to your altitude for every 10 degrees above standard, so with the current atmosphere performance at 1000' should be roughly equivalent to performance at 2200' on the graphs.....but I somehow doubt that would equate to a loss of 20/30mph.

I was getting 290 with Spit & 280 with Hurricane at sea level.

and it tkaes about 4-5 min to balst up yout engine if you overuse those 12lb pressure. Spit is indeed faster and mroe agile in the 100 octanes, but with great power comes great responsability, and you will need a spare eye too keep the engine cool.

The Spit engine with 100 octane is toast within about 2 mins of full throttle. full radiator

Where did you get this rumor from?

They only said it was not recommended to run for over 5 mins on 12lbs... in actuality, who knows how long it could have gone for. Judging by the conservative nature of most engine manufacturers, probably a lot longer...
