Am I right in thinking that you will lose the overclock on your CPU if you install 8gig of ram? A few tech's told me if I have anymore then 4 gig ram with my overclocked 17 930, then I would lose it's overclock of 4.0Ghz. How true is this? does anyone know? That's why I won't get anymore then 4gigs of ram. Please only answer this if you know for certain. Please can you also explain how I would lose the overclock. Thankyou!!

Generally speaking - no - people can obviously overclock successfully using 8Gig (or more) RAM.
What may (?) be a factor is if you are adding more sticks of RAM that are not exactly same as those you currently run now. I have heard that there can be problems with mixing memory sticks from different manufacturers even though they are on paper exactly the same spec. (Have even heard that there can be issues with different production batches of same-spec memory from the same manufacturer. !?) A more likely possibility is that your motherboard may struggle to run 8Gig at overclocked rates, while having no problems with 4 - the extra power requirements may necessitate reducing clock speeds. Obviously is motherboard dependent. Many will OC on 8Gig or more, but if you have been specifically told not to by people that are knowledgable and that you trust (?) then you may be best to heed their advice. That's all I can suggest. Maybe someone else can give more info.

Yes, I'd say 4Gig is about the sweet spot now. More is better but diminishing returns kick in pretty much above 4 I think.

Kendo has pretty much got it, if you populate all a motherboards (for example) 4 memory banks it likely will bring your overclock down due to more strain on the memory controller, but 8GB I would say is maybe nearer the sweet spot these days, so a mother board with dual channel 2 x 4 GB equalling 8GB using two slots of a 4 memory bank situation would be my advise ... assuming you are using a 64 bit OS of course, ram is cheap just now and it wont go wrong.
I've actually went 16GB ram, 4 x 4GB in quad channel on my latest build, but this board actually has 8 ram slots, so again I've only populated half of them and still got a nice overclock of 4.6 GHz on my socket 2011 I7-E 3960X build. |
