I was thinking of a 3 screen display upgrade this year, but I think I will hold out for a HMD...that Natalia one may be the beginning...

I wear varifocal glasses and using TrackIr, when I look sideways...not ideal.

But with a HMD, no more problems !

Also the Natalia can track your hands with its cameras. That means you could be flipping switches in mid air ! for a real VR experience.

Of course price goes with image size and resolution...but its becoming real, a 75 inch at 10 feet equivalent for $500 seems to be a possibility within a year (optimism is my middle name)

It will be interesting to see what their "Marina" see through goggles are like. (My wifes name by the way-so it should be easy to justify the purchace !!!)

I wonder if it will be similar to the Sony Glastron goggle from way back when? The only time I saw them after their paper release was on the ADF website in a "Future Soldier" presentation. Super imposing combat data and gun mounted camera image over the soldiers field of vision.

Back to the Natalia, will 1280×1024 resolution be viable for our sim? I supose it depends on what it looks like with your head in the game.

I remember bad attacks of motion sickness when using those early 3D virtual reality systems in the 80/90's

Cheers!

S!

Has anyone tried these?

http://www.sony.co.uk/hub/personal-3d-viewer

EDIT:
Price seems to be in the same range as 30" monitors. $1270 in Amazon.
EDIT EDIT:
Resolution: 1280 x 720 ... never mind then. Let's wait for the real deal. Using word "HD" with 720p should be punishable by death.

"Using word "HD" with 720p should be punishable by death."

Same for hotels that claim to have "high speed internet".

MS Kinect is the cheapest way to go, IMHO, with the same performance.

Possibilities are endless, and like all tech, one day these will be standard issue and probably very cheap. Look where Plasma and other flat panel tv's were ten years ago.

Far more important as resolution, will be the apparent field of view (AF) of such a device.
Sony's field of view is only 45°.
Have you ever watched through binoculars or telescopes equipped with eyepieces with only 45° AF? It's like looking through a barrel with the typical big black circular Border.
But if you equip the same telescope with a 100°AF wide angle eypiece you'll get the feeling of looking through the window of a space ship! There are no boarders, no tunnel view, just a free floating image in front of your eyes.

The prices for these optics are very high, because it's very complicated to generate a sharp image over the entire field of view so close in front of your eyes.

The SENSICS solution from louisv offers 120° horizontal and 45° vertical.
This is already a very good benchmark.
So if I would have money.....
