Hello, new here and am thinking of converting from IL1946to COD, however concerned about how my system would run. the specs are:
AMD Phenom II X940 ATI XFX4890 4GB Crucial Ballistix ram. ASUS AM2+ (M3A79-T deluxe ??) Have been toying with the idea of an upgrade, or could anything could be altered to this? Thanks for any help in advance, |

I am using the following system:
CPU: i7 920 at 2.7 GHz (stock clocks) Graphics: MSI Ati 4890 1Gb RAM: 3GB DDR3 (there was no win7 when i bought it and i didn't want to install vista 64, so i went with XP and stayed below the 4GB limit) OS: Windows 7 Pro 64-bit I run a resolution of 1680x1050 (my monitor's native, 16:10 aspect ratio) on mostly medium detail settings. Performance depends on many factors but overall i find it playable without having to make it "ugly" to run well. Is seems the biggest limiting factor is the amount of RAM on the videocard. It is possible for people with dual core CPUs to run with better frame rates than me because they have more modern graphics cards with more vRAM. I think that to run full graphics at 1920x1080 you need about 1.3GB of free vRAM. Maybe this can be somewhat mitigated by having spare RAM, depending on if the game "moves" textures back and forth between RAM and vRAM on an "as needed" basis (i don't know if it does, but i suspect it's a reasonable thing to do for graphics applications). Flying offline is no problem with my setup and graphics settings, in fact to make it unplayable i would have to create a scenario with too many objects (like flying at rooftop height over London with a lot of enemies and flak around me). I can also fly online as well, but performance is slightly lower. However, that could be due to my low RAM and having extra programs running in the background (like teamspeak), or netcode issues. In any case, i'm usually getting between 30 and 50 FPS, depending on how much goes on on the screen. It is possible to get "hiccups" and stutters if suddenly a lot of things happen at the same time, but they are usually momentary and infrequent. To sum up, don't expect top of the line performance at full graphics. However, you can probably fly the sim at medium detail settings under most circumstances. If you want to upgrade something, that would be the graphics card. Maybe adding some RAM would help too, but only if it is used by the graphics card as a spare "buffer" of sorts (ie, if my above assumption is correct). In that case, adding RAM is probably the cheapest of the two possible upgrades. |

Thanks Blackdog for a concise run down of your graphic settings and hardware. It sounds as though I should be ok to give it a try. I understand that the patches have also helped to increase most people's framerates. I think if I had some DDR3 ram onboard that would help out, but my mobo will only take DDR2 I think. I better grab a copy while it's only £14.99 in the ubi store- and that's for the Collector's Edition!
Cheers, |
