Default 109 Can't Ignite Fuel Storage Tanks

This is one for the developers...

I've just been playing around in the cross country quick mission to get more familiar with startup procedures for various aircraft. After take off I usually fly around and shoot at things for a few minutes. I just shot up the storage tanks on the west side of the field from a 109 E3 and nothing happened--just puffs of impact smoke. I then took a Spit and did the same thing and bang they exploded. I had seen this before when flying the 109's in the France Free Flight quick mission, but I assumed that not all storage tanks are full. This time, same tanks different results.

you need to load beobachtungs geschosse to blow them up.
but be aware that your ammo loadouts will not be loaded if you play the default missions made by the devs...
either you have to edit the missions, or make a complete new one

not the german ones.
They are actually small HE rounds, VERY effective in game.

I have loaded my MG17:
B
SmK H
B
PmK

the E-1 is very nice and sneaky (no tracers ) with it

if you want a german link about this round:

Because they have a small amount of explosive in them to make the flash upon impact, they work pretty well.

I personally prefer a mix of phosphor/tungsten carbide rounds, and I aim for the engines/canopy. Usually preferable (IMHO) to kill the pilot or take out the engine than set it on fire.

When you hit the fuel tank and it explodes, nothing really severe happens in the first moment. But after that, the 109 quickly loses fuel enitl the tank is empty which will occur relatively fast (within 2 mins). I just had that event yesterday o nthe ATAG server where Wellington gunners exploded the tanks of the 109, which dealt no damage to me as a pilot, but after the fireball was gone I realized that the fuel was leaking heavily and within the next 60 seconds the tank was empty.

I also observed that on the Repka dogfight server where 109s seemingly came out of the fireball flying homewards but a mintue later the propeller stopped due to no fuel in the tanks. I conclude that the fuel tank in the current model configuration doesn´t detonate the plane in mid air ( in the best case the plane is still on fire and so the cockpit) immediately, but the plane will go down very soon due to a huge fuel leak (as a result of the tank explosion?).

I used the default E3's Cannon and MG loadouts. I figured the tracers would do it.

One thing I did notice, and forgot to mention, it's much easier setting the depots on fire using E-3's and E-4's cannons.
i dont know but with the right ammunition i have no problem at all, to light them up with only a really short burst (like half a second) with the E1....
but in my belts, every second bullet is a Beobachtungsgeschoss....
i have the same belts in the E3 and E4 so i dont waste my cannons to blow them up, but use the mgs.

Despite the OT, thanks for sharing these observations. Good to know that at least something happens. (I was getting very frustrated lately... big flash - no result)
