Display driver crashes

I have just installed my COD today, however when i choose a mission and then click 'fly' it then loads. Once it has loaded the display driver crashes and it then displays my desktop background however i can hear the gameplay for example when i hit the space button i can hear the cannon of the aircraft firing but cannot get the visual element of the game to play ! Any ideas ? is it my graphics card ?- GeForce 8600GT ?

That card will struggle I fear, what's the rest of your system spec (inc windoze version) and which nvidia driver are you using - I suggest trying the latest (bar 1) nvidia driver if you aren't using a newish one, downloadable from www.guru3d.com or similar sites - look for driver version 270.61

Are you using win7 or xp? Have you got the dx set up correctly, ie 9 for xp?

I've started having this problem as well. I had this problem before when I had Vista and I was told it was a Vista/Display Driver problem and Win7 would fix it. Well after a few months no problems, it has come back.

I will be flying along then the screen will lock, go black, yet maintaining all sound, and eventually I will be able to ESC out to the mission screen. Once at the mission screen I cannot see the map anymore and will have to completely exit the game in order to get things to work right again. That is until it crashes.

Has only happened since this last patch. I have tried 260 270 and even the beta 275 nvidia patches. This has happened recently in IL2 1946 as well so not sure if it is a purely CloD issue or not. But it DID NOT happen until the latest retail patch came out. Coincidence, maybe.

I had the same problem,the cause of the lock ups, black screens and blue screens in my case was the GPU i have a GTX285 which was factory overclocked.I found out the stock clocks and used them ,no more problems
it hasn't happen since i changed the back to stock clocks.So if i was ye look
into your GPU's and lower your clocks see those it help.But what i have read
about display driver crashs it could be hundreds reasons why it happens.
Good luck cause this prob is a right PITA

I have the same problem. I haven't found a solution.
It worked sporadically for a time, then after recent patches and a re-install it doesn't work at all (I can hear it working in the background only).
I don't think it's a display driver crash, but for some reason the minimized game won't open to full screen size. You can see the tab at the bottom of the screen, but it won't open up. Alt-tab doesn't help, nor changing to 'windowed' game-play.

I know from experience, its not hardware and its not CloD. Try installing 275 whql driver, clean install option, and leave settings in nVidia control panel as defaults for '3D' settings. Lowering clock speeds as t4trouble suggests is also a good troubleshooting method.

Thanks for the help and suggestions ! I have now moved to the states for a year from the UK and think i will just pop down to New York city and buy a XXXX hot laptop so i wont have any problems !

So I guess a GPU temp of 90.0 C is what's causing my display driver to crash? That's what CPU-Z was reading at the time of this last crash. Now what can I do about that? It's in a laptop so my options are pretty limited.

I'd suggest taking it to an authorized dealer of the brand you bought it from, have them open it up and clean the fans and coolers with an air blower.

A friend of mine had his i5 recently getting to 80C while idle. He opened the case and cleaned (his own words) "maybe a kilo of dirt from inside the fans, cooler grooves and generally the entire case". After that it was running at 35C while idle.

As dirt accumulates you don't only get lower heat dissipation from the coolers (it fills the grooves and decreases their effective heat radiating surface), it might also be acting as an insulator that's trapping heat in there and i definitely know from past personal experience that it also plays havoc with the fans, stressing their motors, resulting in lower RPM and in some cases even damaging the fans to the point that they need replacing.

That is especially so if dirt is accumulated in an "off-balance" way on one side of a fan. This can tilt their axis slightly and cause constant straining at high RPM. It's a vicious circle too, the higher the temperatures the more the fan will try to compensate and the more it runs at high RPM with unbalanced weight, the more chance of the axis rubbing on other components, wearing out over time and failing.

I generally clean my case once a month or every second month. I used to use a hair drier set on cold but it wasn't powerful enough, so i got a small and compact air blower for about 30-40 Euros (most electric appliances/tools companies make these and there's all sorts of prices and wattage/power). Not shabby at all, considering it's 350W or so. This is much better and you can even get to the fans in the power supply.

Laptops are tricky though and i don't know what kind of warranty (or loss of it) issues you'll have if you open it up yourself, so it's better to take it to them directly.
