Still a decent amount of activity on HyperLobby. We've got 3 BattlefieldUK servers (BF1, 2 and 3) catering to different difficulty levels. Doesn't have everything for everyone but on a weekend we can still pull in 30-40 players.

Similar situation on Skies of Valor. Also look at the Aces over Europe server if you like full real. It is also often crowded.
All (Battlefield, Valor and AOE) are good servers with several years of experience on handling an IL2 with slight differences in the format. The pilots flying in these servers have been selected by expert admining policy during the years and you will find mostly good and polite atmosphere.

There are some decent Russian servers that don't show up on HyperLobby but can be found on X-Fire.

Alexserver has settings similar to Skies of Valor, but a much more limited map selection and non-historical plane-sets. It can be fun though, medium/small maps with takeoffs and landings, you still see as many as 20-30 players there occasionally.

There are also one or two war servers with dynamic fronts, ground targets, etc. Frontovoe Nebo is the one I'm familiar with, they run 4.12 stock. You need to register and familiarize yourself with the rules and you probably need to use a website translate tool to do it, but it's worth the effort if you like big maps with multiple objectives on a nearly full-switch server: http://www.il2.org.ru/. There always seems to be at least a couple players there, sometimes as many as 20-30 during Russian prime-time. You won't understand all the Russian chat if you don't know the language, but they will usually understand the most basic requests in English: "Help, SOS in D4," "bombers in E5," etc.
