how many joysticks?

as the title says- what is the max number of joysticks/devices able to be plugged in?

4 working fine for me, but there are alot of options for axes(~80

)

as i understand it HID allows 128 devices each of 8 axes/128 buttons
but game doesn't recognise buttons over #32,
so, is there an official maximum
