Cool ubuntu - WINE - IL-2 1946

Trying out ubuntu 10.10 ... actually logged into these forums via Firefox while ubuntu is installing ... how geeky is that

Anyone had success with IL-2 1946 and WINE?

With Nvidia, runs straight out of the box as long as a newish version of WINE's installed, on ATI, not at all in my experience, at least on HD4870/4890. I had the latest proprietary ATI driver for Linux, driver enabled, direct rendering on, etc., etc. Immediate segfault. I got the game to run one time somehow, flukily (never worked again), but even in the menu the performance was appalling, less than 1fps in the game. No luck with either of the open-source Radeon drivers either. Joystick worked fine (in fact, I've even used a PS3 controller to play SNES games on Linux). The only problem is, of course, TrackIR. But since I don't use one I wasn't that bothered.

IL-2 has worked offline fine in GNU/Linux systems for years.

At the moment I have tested it to work perfectly with Ubuntu 10.10 (offline) with official AMD/ATI driver (4850 HD), and it works perfectly with "intel" driver for integrated Intel graphics chipsets. Not sure though how it works on Core i5 series graphics integrated on the CPU.

With Trisquel GNU/Linux IL-2 works perfectly offline with "intel" graphics driver (X4500HD) on a fully free system.

There are some issues in online modes, and TrackIR apparently doesn't work so GNU/Linux is sadly somewhat not ready for serious IL-2 gaming.

Cool SOLUTION - Run IL2 on Linux

Hi,
I'm a super maintainer for IL-2 Sturmovik and WINE.
Visit our page at WINEHQ and learn how to run IL-2 on your Linux.

BTW guys, a ray of hope for head-tracking on Linux: uglyDwarf's Linux Freetrack equivalent. Been around for a while, not sure how progress has been going recently.

Hmm, given Moilami's experience, perhaps it was just the particular ATi driver release I was using. I'll have to try it getting the game working again.
