Default Returning il-2 veteran needs advice

Hello all, I am an original old timer to il-2 and after watching for a long time the ups and downs of the new sim I have decided to jump back in and give it a shot now that my comp is very good. I used to fly on a squad with good friends for many years called the DEY squad and my name was DEY-BLACK-USA for those that might remeber, I have ordered the dvd for the sim and understand you have to go through steam which is fine with me, but what I would like to know frommyou all is any tips or things which you all have learned that you can tell me before I get started or need to know. I would like to know if all I need to do is let steam update the game to most recent patch? do I need to turn off any particular setting in the game for better results? does my trackir 5 work right off the bat or do I need to make any changes?

Also if there is any good tutorials to learn engine management or does it come with a manual to learn the planes? anyone on ts and have a ts ip so possibly I could be walked through easier?

thanks all and look forward after many years to be back flying and fighting with you all.

p.s. does anyone know if thr DEY squad still flies on il-2 COD, if so would love to hear from them

Hi black1, I would firstly suggest that you repost your thread in the main forum as the 'Pilot's Lounge' can be a bit of a back-water as far as 'assistance required' is concerned.

With regard to your impending Cliffs of Dover install, I would suggest that if installing under Windows 7, you avoid the default 'Program Files' location because of Windows over-zealous protection and install to a location of your choosing, preferrably on a different hard drive (SSD anyone!). Then allow Steam to do its' thing and update your install.

With regard to optimizing and learning your game there are no manuals as such and the manual included with the game is sketchy at best. However there are several excellent threads, not least this one by Blackdog_kt:
http://forum.1cpublishing.eu/showthread.php?t=24782
and here by 2GFlea:
http://forum.1cpublishing.eu/showthread.php?t=24547
or on the subject of optimizing and performance (read below first):
http://forum.1cpublishing.eu/showthread.php?t=29004

As I'm sure you've noticed, the community is currently awaiting the release of the new beta patch (sometime next week?) which should address certain performance issues and fix a few 'broken' items in the game. If this proves successful it will then become available as an auto update through Steam and will probably require a different optimization path. My advice would therefore be to go with what you have and wait until the general release of the patch through Steam before starting to optimize.

Finally, (I apologise for the length of reply) despite having been a long time follower of IL2 and these forums, I am unable to pass on the current status of your old squad.

Good luck and welcome back.

~S~

Welcome back.

Ive not heard of the DEY squad.

Depending on which aircraft is your usual ride you may want to check out one of several videos on you tube as to the start up proceadure. The red aircraft seem more tempremental to start but maybe thats because I really only fly blue.

Check out this guy in this post:

Doesn`t Steam have its own install folder ie. where you install steam? I mean folder Steam/SteamApps.

Can one change the prefered install folder for every steam account game?
Maybe to avoid uninstalling other titles when a steam HDD partition is full?

Check out a link #2 in my sig for performance tips

#1 for offline campaigns. Stock campaigns are not great.

Install a beta patch as soon as it is out for performance and some AI fixes.

For online gameplay get on TS of ATAG server.

Hey Black, I remember you and your squad. I used to fly a bit with Dalper in my very early days (2005ish). He pretty much took me under his wing.

Anyway, welcome to CloD. I'm like you, literally just installed the sim two nights ago after sitting on the fence. It seems to run great, contrary to a lot of what I read here. I say jump in with both feet.

Hope to see you in the skies soon!

Thank you all for the advice and for the posts on engine management it is greatly appreciated. I see that the community here is still helpful when it comes to others needing help with certain things pertaining to the game which is great.

Danjama I remember you as well from back in the day, we flew alot together on the warclouds server, what great fun those days were, I also remember rapier and the others from DEY and hope to find them online someday to fly again. THanks for all the help and I suppose I will wait till the patch comes out and then set it all up and not in "programs" area as was told. Look forward to talking with you all more real soon, again thanks for the help.

Hey Black1, welcome back.

Haven't seen your squadies around. At least not with the DEY tag.
Great bunch of guys. Flew with some of guys since 2001-2002 back on UBI game lobby. God we are old.

I hope the next patch will bring back a lot of old Il-2 guys we used to fly with.

I remember Dead Eye squadron, I tried to get them into the USL once season a few years back but I think things were already dwindling.

If you are up for squadron flying again Black, and fly allied closed pit, then take a look @ No.401 here. http://forum.1cpublishing.eu/showpos...9&postcount=13

They are a part of http://forum.1cpublishing.eu/showpos...39&postcount=5
