Atk/Def Number in Parenthesis?

Can anyone tell me what the number in parenthesis means beside each troop's attack and defense score? I was thinking maybe it was something like the actual values based on morale, or....? However, my troops are all neutral and the numbers in parenthesis are lower, so that wouldn't make sense to me. Thanks for any info!
