Default Noob question on combat?

Hey all, just got game and I dont understand the combat all that well. Now mind you I got it through Steam dont thing it came with manual Anyway I dont see Hitpoints or dont know how much life is left on people in my army or how much life is left on the enemy. Also what is the sense on having peasants and fairies they do little to no damage and die to quickly. Can someone enlighten me pleae on how to use the combat and how to level my mage up the best way? Thanks...

peasants are very good in high numbers sure they die fast but they have best damage compared to leadership

and for your question

i think the alt key let's you see hitpoints above head i think
^^

and either way you can also right click on a unit to see their stats

Three or four hundred peasants are certainly useful in the first stages of the game (which is all I have done so far); and they seem to be available in unlimited quantities.
