My trusty old MS Sidewinder FF2 stick seems to have an annoying tic.
It sometimes happens when I'm going too fast, or to slow, or have forgotten to raise the flaps, or am badly out of trim, or damaged, but often for no apparent reason. The FF starts forcefully jerking the stick forward and back. It's a bit like the wheel touchdown kick but it doesn't usually go away. By triming carefully I can usually minimize the effect enough to baby it home. Reflying usually cures the problem for awhile. It seems more likely to happen online. It would be interesting to know more about the various effects in the ForceFeedback folder actually do, and what conditions trigger them? |

The only oddity I get on mine is the loss of FF if I alt tab out or hit the "windows" key. I've used my MSFF2 in both XP32 and Vista 64.
I used to get the same loss of FF with my gameport version in XP. Maybe your "grip" sensor has worked loose. That's the little critter that looks to see if you're gripping the stick. |

Looks like you have to crack it open and carefully clean it & super carefully re-asseble the stick ...
someone told me that this discontnued item will be in production (if it's not allready) by a Japanese firm ... in that case i will buy a 6pack!!! ... ![]() |

Would also be great if someone would hack the software, so that it will be usable under windows 7 etc.

I bookmarked this one sometime ago. I set it a bit of a challenge, Il-2 demo and gameport MSFFB1 + USB Thrustmaster Top Gun Afterburner... initial impressions were not good for Pinnacle. Couldn't assign keypress to hatswitch direction and have it work in game. The idea was say, F3 to look up, and then use S + F3 for flyby view. Works fine with Sidewinder software, which is why I'll be hanging on to XP for as long as possible. Then I'll start experimenting.

I think the joystick problem has been solved by replacing (of all things) the PC power supply.
Attempts to overclock my Intel e6400 (2.13 ghz.) CPU with an Asus P5n sli motherboard and a 420 watt powersupply failed miserably. I spent a couple hundred bucks and bought an XFX 680i motherboard and a 700 watt powersupply and now have the e6400 cpu to 3.23 ghz. ![]() I think the old 420 watt powersupply was cooked and not coping with the usb MSsidewinderFF. This in spite of the fact the the FF stick is pluged directly (no transformer) into a 110v wall socket. Thanks for all the JS info. |

I am still ,occasionally, getting the lurching and jumping bug in the MS FF2 stick.
Interestingly, even if I trim up for hands free flying, which stops the stick from jerking temporarily, the outside view is still slightly jerking in the same cadence as the stick. But it seems that if I turn the stick upside down and shake it around a bit the lurch goes away (no rattles). I remembered that I disassembled a very early non-FF gameport sidewinder JS to attempt to repair a switch. The "pots" were actually 3 mirrors. Could it be that a speck of dust is causing a spurious input? The stick seems to be doing pretty well now so I am in no hurry to attempt to disassemble and clean the mirrors. I got so annoyed (before I tried the invert and shake) that I bought a Saitek X52 pro. Although the Saitek is an amazing piece of work, I was almost instantly disappointed in the lack of FF. In fact I (almost) feel I am cheating with the MS FF2. The stall shake is, for me, a significant dogfighting advantage. Using the Saitek throttle as elevator trim is VERY sweet and all those buttons and stuff are tits, so I'm not sending it back or anything. I sure hope that the 1C development team has a decent FF stick in their stable. I'd hate to see the FF effects not exploited. |
