Default Trouble after 4.09m install

I've been running 4.08m for awhile now with no problems.

I downloaded the 4.09m beta and unzipped into my
C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\IL-2 Sturmovik 1946 folder.

I didn't (drat!) back up first.

Then I also went right ahead and unpacked the .rar file for the 4.08_to_4.09b_switcher called Switcher for Smog that I got at Mission4Today.

Although the Switcher seems to work ok, the program dies out after a few seconds of the splash screen, just long enough to read that the version # changes.

Salute Woodchuck

Is that switcher program for use with the modded versions of the game? Or just for plane jane IL-2?

I know there are a lot of versions switchers out there.

If you want my suggestion, it would be to re-install 4.08, make a backup copy, then go to the AAA boards located here:

http://allaircraftarcade.com/forum/index.php

Register with the boards, then download the 'UNIFIED INSTALLER'. (first thread on the top board on AAA)

This is a selection of the best mods, which also comes with a switcher.

It will allow you to select standard 4.08, 4.09, 4.08 modded, and 4.09 modded. It is basically foolproof.

This way you will be able to select whatever game version you want with the click of a mouse. Plus you get the fun of flying all the AI aircraft, all the newly created modded aircraft, with the new sounds, new maps, etc.

The 4.08_to_4.09b_switcher called Switcher for Smog doesn't apply to Mods.
Once I get my trusty 4.08 working again I'm gonna BACKITUP and then try out the mods.

I tried deleting the 6 files that were added by Switcher for Smog. That didn't help.

I've also tried reinstalling 4.08m over the current, malfunctioning install.
The splash screen still just briefly starts in 4.08m and then disappears.

Do I need to delete everything and drag out all my original disks (I've bought them all over the years) and try to reinstall and re-upgrade again from scratch?

Yikes!

Thanks

woodchuck,

I'm afraid you totally messed up. You were simply supposed to take the Switcher files and place them in your 4.08 folder. That's it. The relevant 4.09b files are all in the Switcher folder. It would have taken you 2 minutes and you would have been able to switch between 4.08m and 4.09b with the click of a mouse.

At this point you will need a fresh install of 4.08m to start over. Don't forget to backup certain files before you re-install so it's a little less painful.

I downloaded 1946 from the UBI website for $10.00 awhile back.

I still have the downloaded files but I thought (mistakenly?) that it had to be installed over the original IL2 files.

So should I add/remove the malfuntioning il2 1946 install i have, and reinstall from the downloaded 1946 setup file i still have on the harddrive?

When I run "setup" from the unzipped 1946 I bought online it wants to do an uninstall so I stopped. I'm a bit afraid it is going to ask for a "verification key or code" which either didn't need or lost in the meantime.

System restore?
Who knew?

Worked perfectly.
I'm back happily flying v 4.08m.
Thnx KG26_Alpha and all the rest for such quick help.

Can you imagine porking the game the day the Trak IR I'm expecting arrives?

After I get the the Trak IR set up I'm gonna try that mod that allows 6 degrees of freedom. Then at least I'll get to see who's shooting me down.

I find the 6dof mod to be mediocre at best.

It is helpful on the Ki43 early models with the telescopic sight, but by and large I find it of little use, and regardless of what is said, the IL2 cockpits are not well set up for it. Lots of gaps in wings, bulkheads, etc...

Do give it a try by all means, but honestly, don't expect a revelation.

It really depends on which aircraft you favour how well the 6dof mod works for you. Virtually of the pacific fighters planes work perfectly, no gaps. Most of the german jets are fine too. Probably around 20% (can't be bothered checking) of the rest of the cockpits have good to great 6dof capability.
The mod itself is really well done, it keeps your head relative to the rest of cockpit, ie lean into the gunsight, then turn your head and the headrest is further away.

I found it a revelation, just not with 100% of the aircraft.
