From the start I've been running COD at 1680*1050. I've been setting model detail and effects a high and disabling trees and grass and reducing building to keep the frame rates up.
Since the new patch I've had some issues with launcher errors so I reinstalled everything from scratch. In doing so I lost my video configuration so it went back to default which is generally at medium, textures high, with grass and trees enabled. I was surprised how much fuller the environment looks with the default settings. In my quest to run model details at high I had to remove so much extra content the world look lifeless. Frame rates are excelent, upto 100fps over the ocean and generally above 40fps high over towns. And the Medium settings look fine! I think I'm going to stick with these settings for a while! Cheers! S!
Skoshi as you can see the game has been playable even without the excess eyecandy ![]() I can not wait for the day IL-2 runs smoothly with things fixed..will be a day of rejoice. Until then lower settings for playability and still looks good ![]() ![]() |

I came across this previously after one of the updates, when luthier stated that they had changed the LOD bias so that selecting lower detail levels would not be that noticeable. I tested by setting model detail to ‘Medium’, and tried to find any visual difference in the detail of the aircraft without success. I did notice that on occasion the markings on some aircraft were not visible at a certain distance from my own, but this wasn’t consistent enough to form an opinion. It also seemed to be influenced by the number of aircraft present, almost as if there was an aircraft texture ‘budget’ which was affected by the setting.
I also feel that some of the graphic settings are not named correctly, which may be a result of the translation from the original Russian. For example, ‘Buildings Amount’ seems to change the amount of buildings textured inside the visible LOD circle, rather than the implied amount physically rendered – this should rather be called ‘Building Texture Amount’, which would more accurately describe its function. Most of us seem to have an aversion to turning any graphic details down to obtain better frame rates, but this didn’t appear to have much of an impact on visual quality previously. However, since the latest patch, it seems turning settings up does not have as much of a negative impact on frame rates as before. This may be why many did not see any performance increase with the patch, but would have if they increased the graphic settings and saw a lower than expected decrease in frame rates.

I don't mind losing eye candy for the sake of smoother running but what worries me is losing essential details. For example turning down 'Building Amount' can cause the computer to not bother drawing the target you are looking to drop a bomb on or can remove the hangars from the airfield you are trying to return to so you cant find it. Dropping the settings related to ground details loses you nothing when just flying around but it can mean that when you RTB the runway is invisible until you are almost over it.
On the other hand, the other day I tried turning down the resolution to solve an annoying tendency to go into slide show mode when diving into a large group of enemy aircraft and although the result was horrible 1980s style grainy graphics the ground targets stuck out like a sore thumb! I did not get a chance to see if it made enemy aircraft easy to see because the graphics were so horrible I changed the resolution back ![]() If anyone knows what settings would help me see enemy aircraft I would love to know as that is my biggest problem playing COD ![]() |
