Default OT: Airfield Memorials

I know this is off topic but I thought it would be of interest – as it was something I came across quite unexpectedly whilst taking a “short cut” across the old RAF aerodrome at Lisset. I had no idea it was there – but it completely blew me away and luckily I had my camera to grab some shots.

My local flying club is nearby so I was well aware of the airfield and would occasionally fly people over it and do mock circuits around the remnants of the old main runway. A few years back however it became the site of a wind farm and so the practice stopped.

What I did not know however was that part of the agreement for using the site as a wind farm was to erect a permanent memorial to those who had lost their lives flying from the base.

Attached are some of the pictures I took and some links for historical information. Admittedly I Photoshop’d the merged one to give a more dramatic sky.

I’m sure you’ll agree with me however that it is an absolutely superb and fitting tribute - not just to those who lost their lives, but to all those who served at the base as well. I'm sure there are many people who drive along the main road never know that they have just gone past a site of major historical significance. Memorials like this one ensure the longevity of the memory.

That's a beautiful memorial.

Last week I was at the USAF museum and really was impressed with their memorial area. Here are some pics.
