Desktop Window Manager causing Crashes?

I've been having crashes in the game, I came to these forums and read through a lot of threads and following the advice here it made my game stable enough to complete the Training Levels without any crashes.

But now that I'm out in the world map, I am crashing again, every couple of minutes.

Looking through the Computer Management Events Log, I am seeing that every time I crash, the log has the following at the same time:

The Desktop Window Manager was unable to start because composition was disabled by running application.

I have tried turning off the DWM in the Processes section of the Task Manager and it does seem to increase the amount of time before the next crash. However, whether or not it is on or off in the Processes, it eventually attempts to start again and is (or at least seems to be) causing to KB crash.

Is there a relation and/or is there a way to more permanently disable the DWM and prevent it from trying to restart?
