GOG vs Steam version

Hi, I recently ended up buying IL-2 (again) this time on gog.com since I like gog's no DRM policy etc. but I already own it on steam.

My question is, which version do you think is better and did GOG change anything in the executable? I heard somewhere that they forced vsync, is this true?

Anyway, I'm planning to get the SAS ModAct since it's a small mod and covers everything that I need improved (mainly sounds).

Any difference between the versions I should be aware of?

Hi

If you intend to fly offline then you wont have any problems with applying MODS.

Online will be a different experience though.

The GOG version is exactly the same as the DVD version, but with the copy protection removed, as far as I can tell (I have both). I have not experienced forced vsync, I suspect that reporter had vsync on by default in Nvidia control panel.

There is no shortage of IL2 1946 disks on Ebay for sale very cheaply. It would be worth it to get one and download the official patches for it so you can have a clean official and base version of the flight sim to start with.

Steam was always a disaster for IL2 and there is simply no guarantee that any source of a patched up version of the sim is going to be correct or legitimate.

Once you have a clean version all patched up you can simply backup the whole thing in a few different places on various media so that you will not lose it again. I have copies on optical disks, hard drives and thumb drives in addition to having all the old discs and patches saved and backed up.

Go ahead and play with hacks and mods, and when that makes the install buggy you can simply delete the entire mess and start new again by copying from your backup. In it's official version IL2 is very stable and reliable, I and my friends have old computers and hard-drives laying around that are ten years old that have good working old copies of it. When you go with Steam or some hack/mod all bets are off......

I have two boxed copies of the game as well as the GOG version, but I do think that's a slightly paranoid point of view. The only difference in the GOG version (having done a diff of the directory) are the files for the GOG uninstaller rather than the original and some files which offer integration with Game Explorer (the "Games" menu from Win Vista/7) which are available from Microsoft.
The game works perfectly well without these extra files, so it's possible to delete them if they cause concern.

If you are so concerned about the provenance of your software, how can you trust any closed-source software? Nobody has any guarantee what any of it does because it's not possible to analyse the code, so everything has to be taken on trust. This is why the source for my Il-2 server utility is open, because I think it's common courtesy to do so if I am to expect people to use something made by some random bloke.

Steam has long fixed this.

Strange .......... had someone missing 2 files folders very recently with their steam install, they couldn't see the briefings online and paint cache so they didn't see skins online either iirc

If its fixed that's great
