Could somebody do a beginniers guide on MP?

I tried my first multiplayer game, and got to fly a plane for few minutes and it looked really fun and all that, but heck the whole system is confusing. Right from the start where you choose the team I don't know how do I get to the plane, I think first I thought I was in the game but was actually looking into someones elses plane, I mean this is really confusing
