may I recommend The Ninth Day...
not a gun battle in sight, no tanks, no planes...
but THE most intelligent exploration of the Gestapo Modus Operandi and how it controlled people...in this case a Catholic Priest on "holiday" from Dachau, but it could of been anyone... based on a true story and actual memoirs its THE MOST powerful bit of cinema I've seen in years. I caught it by fluke on SBS in Australia, the wife was glued to it aswell. The war of words, control and ideological head-screwing is incredible. If you are in the mood for thought food this film is a real mindf**k. Superb. Like Downfall best watched in the original German with subtitles. Not as broad and immediate as Downfall but somehow more intimate...
