I only know of one person in my family who fought in WWII.
I never knew him, but I remember a story of how he and one other soldier survived an ambush while they were crossing a feild. He and the other soldier ran into a barn filled to the ceiling in potatoes and after digging their way through the potatoes, they discovered that it was a German hideout and stayed in the loft of the barn for four days while German troops conspired below them. At least they had something to eat!
