Many hundreds of the best IL2 pilots have been flying this sim for the last 13 years with no icons on hard settings. I regularly practice with a squad that has three 70 year old men flying with no enemy icons every week. Yeah, they have a hard time of it but so did WWII pilots, and I give anyone flying with no or limited icons a lot of respect, they are the real IL2 pilots and simmers in the IL2 community.
It is much more historically accurate to fly with no icons as if you read first-hand accounts in WWII you will note that the pilots had varying degrees of competency and ability of which eyesight was just one aspect.
Attaching large colored arrows and banners to all the aircraft flying around changes IL2 from a flight sim into a game.
At the very least you should fly friendly icons only so you don't destroy the historical fact that most of the aerial kills in WWII the victims never saw coming. Limited friendly icons are better, especially if they are cut down to half a kilometer or less so you have to learn to I.D. aircraft by silhouette again as real pilots had to do historically in WWII.
