I think the game has to be written to get the full benefit for sli or crossfire.Although you might get slightly better results with multiple cards.I did not.

Wrong... At the time you were using Crossfire the drivers were in their infancy. There are several modes in which you can run the game under and utilities such as Nhancer and Rivatuner can force settings needed. In most cases with an Ati 1300 you didn't have the horse power to see that much of a difference.
I run 1920X1200 perfect 16XAF and 8XAA with the 4.09b dlls with the terrain distance doubled and I can assure you it doubled my performance adding the second card.
The key is forcing the game to use Split Fram Rendering. For what ever reason the newer version of Alternate Frame Rendering causes a pulsing studder effect.
SLI and CF are a heck of alot more mature now.
