when dealing with stacks:

1) use tactics.. so that they will attack the tank first and wont have enough speed to fly at the first round to your archers (worst case scenaio: stacks of black dragons only and you are sure that you cannot kill them all in the 1st round and do not have an unit which has higher initiative then black dragons: at the 1st round leave an unit in wait so the enemy monsters will move, then cast timeback on the tank and attack with that archer, the tank will get the +3 init in the second round = that's when you cast mass initiative spell and kill on

And usually there are like 2-3 stacks of dragons, 1 goes down by skelletons, the second by other archers, and if there is a third you couldn't kill place the tank correctly so the 3rd stack of dragons will attack him (the tank doesn't have to attack). Simple math.
