While the 770 is a good card and theoretically you could get close to 780 performance the 780 overclocks just as good, so you'll always have a performance difference.
For example here's what I scored with mine overclocked to 1228Mhz boost and 200Mhz increase in memory speed:

You don't get that with the 770.
