I did it 2 times as viking, the first time i had call of nature scrolls but the second i didnt.

With your standart army thay should be 'weak' to you.If thay are 'slightly weaker' or more then it's bad.
However on my second run when i saw the necromancer and he was 'slightly weaker' i thought i'm doomed, but when i entered battle and saw his army composition i thought he's doable becouse he didnt have any skeletons or any necromancers and his sceleton archers wasnt big stack.
He had 1 stack of ghosts, 1 weak stack of zombies and something like 5 stacks of vampires and ancient vampires.

I got super unlucky. They were both Strong and I didn't have an XP shrine so I was level 4.

However, if I were to pass it, it had some good items... blah. Thanks, I didn't realize the variance was that large that they could be 'weak'.

Ok at least now I know to keep trying new games!
