Have seen it happen.
It's due to the chat box being opened when the mission starts. (So, it's not so random.)
To fix it, you should be able to open the chatbox again, and either then finish typing a message so the box disappears, or click next to it, so it closes. (I'm not too sure here, I always try to prevent it from happening)
